TORNADO: DIRECT HIT, WILBRAHAM, MASSACHUSETTS

OUR CABIN, WHICH HAS BEEN ON THE TOP OF WILBRAHAM MOUNTAIN SINCE 1939,  IS NO MORE! Borne of a hurricane in Springfield in 1938, it died of a tornado in Wilbraham yesterday, 2011.

  1. I'm so sorry to hear that. I grew up on the other side of the mountain (down Monson Rd., just past Glendale Rd.). We drove over that mountain every day. Do you know if there is extensive damage to the houses along Monson Rd. toward Monson?

  2. @AnonymousAnswer to Anonymous. We're driving out today to assess the damage. We were told by a neighbor that the lines are down all along Monson Road, and that our cabin is no more. Don't know if we'll be able to reach the top of Wilbraham Mountain today, but we'll try. I'll let you know this evening.

  3. I just read your blog about the cabin and it deeply saddens me. I am relieved that L is safe. I am keeping both of you in my heart. It seems this tornado blew away a cherished piece of history and remembrance.

  4. I just told Jordan about the tornado and its mountain top hit of the ancestral, american umbilical cord to all that was lost in the mountains of Marash. I noted that in the same week the Tornado took the Wilbraham house, the new owners of our orchard/garden property tore up the garden and all the trees Martha and I and Uncle Paul planted 60 years ago. Sensing me upset, Jordan said it is sad that those things are gone, but what is left to you (children and love and family) is worth infinitely more than what was lost. He is right, and I do thank God for the Love of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love he has planted (garden)in my life and the mountaintop home of love He has built for me, and in which my family and I live, a garden and home that can never be ripped away by a tornado or the hand of man.

  5. How terrible! You and all your family LOVED the cabin so much. So many
    memories!
It is so wonderful that you bookmark and memorialize it with it's genesis via
hurricane and demise via funnel. Wind to Wind as perhaps all our lives are
    bookmarked and sometimes memorialized!!

but today we celebrate a fantastic Spring day,

  6. Sorry to hear about the cabin. How is Karoun?

I didn't know you had a cabin there. My father's cousin, Bill Weingraf and his wife Ethel had a summer house in Peru for many years.

There were tornadoes in Mass. in the 1950s. I remember my parents talking about them, and preparations being taken when there was a possibility of another tornado.

  8. I'm so sorry. I still remember going there as a kid and seeing half of the property sunny while the other half was pouring rain!
