Can't remember the original expression in Armeno-Turkish, but Marash Girl grew up hearing the saying which translates, "Spit up you hit your mustache, spit down you hit your beard." Or the English equivalent, Caught between a rock and a hard place; caught between scylla and Charybdis.
In the days when spittoons were prevalent (methinks they disappeared around the 1950's), folks understood!
