Peter would often chuckle when he regaled us with his memory of how he and his brother Paul would ascertain which wife their Muslim neighbor was going to sleep with on any particular night: the young boys would climb up onto their rooftop (the roofs were all flat) in Kumbet and scan the next door neighbor's roof to ascertain which wife was arranging the bedding -- the "yorghans" -- for that night.

ReplyDeletebecause of the collapse of moral standards, the rise of liberalism and its victory over the christian imperative, the rooftop has come to america, the city on a hill, a hill shorn of its elevation.
ReplyDeletePeter was not commenting on moral standards; he accepted the mores of other cultures, and enjoyed observing them, enjoyed the challenge of understanding them, from childhood on.
ReplyDeletei think you are wrong on that one. that viewpoint supports your own, which makes the accuracy of the observation suspect. i had conversations with him which indicated exactly the opposite position of the one you are iterating.
