PETE SEEGER: "Yer roof is leakin''"

An old fellow, a Mainiac, is rocking on his front porch, the rain dripping around him, when a tourist driving by pulls up in front of the house.

Hey, old man, yer roof is leakin'.

(Silence from the old man.)

Well, why don'cha fix it?

Ya durn fool! Cancha see it's rainin'? the old fellow finally answers.

Well, why doncha fix it when it ain't rainin'?

It don't leak then, ya durn fool!

Sunday night, as the rain battered our roof, I remembered that old story of Pete Seeger's.   When I first heard Pete Seeger telling it, I found it funny, not fully understanding the import until years later, when we tried to repair the corrugated tin roof on the Wilbraham cabin that was "leakin'" right over our bed!

Is your roof "leakin'"? Have you ever tried to fix it?

  1. those two in the picture as well as their 2 siblings and mother are running a 5k race this morning, 3/12/11, which will lead them over a high bridge that spans the intracoastal. jordan will be doing them all 2x better. the race he will be running is a 15k race, for which, he admits, he is not ready to run, being about 10 pounds heavier (can't see the fat, only muscle) than his prime running weight.
thanks for the photo. i remember the cabin, well, and the property. always loved it and the excitement of the prospect of exploration, and th imagination that dawned as long as i kept my attention drawn uphill, and away from the valley and all the babel.

  2. There is a worker right now in my bathroom, who has torn out the ceiling (needed replacement anyway) and is working on the 100-year-old pipes to the upstairs apartment that started leaking on us yesterday - and it was NOT nice clean rainwater, either! That gave it a bit of urgency ... .
