'Late in Elizabeth Graver’s eloquent new novel, a therapist warns a very troubled young man against what he calls the “geographic” cure: “You can’t fix yourself by going somewhere else. . . . You’ll always take yourself along.”' [Alida Becker in her 2013 New York Times review of Elizabeth's Graver new novel, The End of the Point.]
Even earlier than that Jon Kabat-Zinn wrote Wherever You Go There You Are!
And even earlier than that, Peter Bilezikian mouthed the same philosophy!
Marash Girl disagrees!
On a deeper level, the so called, individual self, is like a tiny cell within one body. Fundamentally, All is ONE, always and forever.
ReplyDeletemusic also can transform

DeleteYes, and the nazis had the Jews perform Mozart as the prelude to the chambers of death. The Germans were and always have been lovers of nature, their nineteenth century poets bearing witness to that. Munich is a testimony to art, particularly to music. There resides the cuvilles theater, a richly brocaded nineteenth century theater, ornate with cherubims and plush chairs, intimate in its design for 300. The theater was perfect for eighteenth century compositions, and particularly Mozart opera. Immediately next door is the national theater, seating 3000, and built during the 'thirties, ideal for Wagner, and hitler proteges. European history is replete with culture, the genius of individuals, and the skulls of the many.
ReplyDeleteMarash girl: saving the self? Very possibly. From a Christian perspective, there is only one way to save the soul, and it is never by or through the environment. But, then you know that. Therefore, you must be using the word, soul', in a different way. A change in one's environment, be it people, or nature, can obviously have a profound effect. But, then again, God can speak through anything, and anyone, any circumstance, to save the soul. It is whether we have the ears to hear and the eyes to see, and then, of course, the ability and will to receive that truth and life saving food for our soul.
ReplyDeleteAmen, Brother! Mistitled. I've changed soul to self in the title
